Alan’s Story, 2026

Timber Trades' Benevolent Society Posted on Friday 27 March 2026 by TTBSAdminFriday 27 March 2026

In 2022, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The tumour was successfully removed, but due to complications, I was left with permanent sight loss. I am now registered as Severely Sight Impaired (blind) and use a white cane to help me navigate my day-to-day life.
Since losing my sight, life has been difficult, challenging and at times, dangerous. Being told I would never drive again was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to accept. I suddenly realised that simple tasks I once took for granted like making a cup of tea, preparing food, or going for a walk on my own had become huge obstacles that I needed to learn to overcome.
I now attend Bradbury Fields Centre for the Blind, where I first heard about Meta AI Glasses and how they can help people living with sight loss. I visited my local Vision Express opticians where they kindly let me try a demonstration pair and explained how they work, what they are capable of and how they could benefit me.
With the kind and generous support of the TTBS, I have finally been able to get a pair of my own and to say they are a game changer would be an understatement !
I no longer have to rely on my wife to read my mail or check my phone for messages and emails. I simply say, “Hey Meta” and give the command I need. The glasses can call or text contacts, read letters, menus and bus timetables, tell me the time and even give me the weather forecast. The list of ways they help me feels endless.
Having these glasses has restored so much of my independence and confidence.
I would like to say a special thank you to Barbara and Christella for helping to make this happen for me.
