Brian’s Story
“Fourteen years ago, at the age of 42, Brian was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The impact on his life was significant, not least because he was unable to continue in the job he had dedicated 25 years to. Eventually, he was made redundant.
Although Brian initially experienced mild anxiety, he largely managed to cope. Over time, however, his anxiety increased, though he was adept at masking it. When I first met Brian eight years ago, I was struck by his apparent acceptance of his illness and the effect it had on his life. As he had worked for one of my company’s major customers for many years, we quickly found common ground and developed a good rapport. He came across as someone with a reasonably positive outlook on life. I had no idea at the time that underneath his cheerful exterior, he was struggling with far deeper emotional challenges.
As our friendship developed, I began to notice moments of anxiety, though Brian always reassured me that he was managing. However, during a more recent interaction – while I was helping him with an application for additional support from the DWP – I witnessed a different side of him. The upcoming phone interview with the DWP caused him visible distress and agitation. This was the first time I had seen him so noticeably affected. After the call, he confided in me, revealing that he had suffered from severe anxiety for years. He shared that he couldn’t enter a shop if there were other people inside and would often abandon his shopping due to overwhelming anxiety.
Fortunately, Brian was open to accepting help. He agreed to counselling sessions offered through TTBS and our partnership with BHSF and the change has been remarkable. Brian has spoken positively about the experience, saying how he looked forward to each session and always came away feeling better. He described how the counselling helped him shift from negative to positive thinking and expressed how much he has benefited emotionally and mentally from the support.
Brian’s journey is a powerful reminder of the hidden struggles many individuals face and how the right support, delivered with understanding and compassion, can make a profound difference”.
